When others hear I’m
creating and exhibiting art, they most often remark, “Oh, you paint?” Until
recently, I would smile and say, “No,” and then mumble something about collage,
assemblage and how they might find my work a bit strange. Now, upon inquiry, I quickly
reply that I’m working as a collage and assemblage artist before dissolving
into my usual qualifying comments.

A few months ago, I mentioned a project that featured an old
wooden drawer, some glass yogurt jars and other recyclables. Surprisingly, a
photograph from that project was selected for the cover of the current GreenCraft magazine. For
me, the project's “white and woodsy” tones suggest, what is now, an eagerly anticipated autumn.

While I was selecting a few materials for an upcoming exhibit, I
came upon some aluminum measuring spoons. When I saw them, I immediately
thought of my grandmother’s set. On hot summer days it wasn't unusual to find
me in her air-conditioned kitchen, spoons in hand, crafting an assortment of
edible and “not so edible” creations.

Some of my preliminary work led to these visuals. The hand-carved needle is one of my favorite vintage pieces.
I enjoyed pairing the old with the new. It's fascinating to see how our tools evolve over time.

Time spent in the garden has been limited of late. Two weeks ago,
during a particularly lovely morning, I sustained a significant hand wound when
a chair I was sitting in toppled over. I knew its legs were unstable, resting
on some large tree roots, but I totally underestimated the danger. Ten stitches
and a tetanus shot later, I returned to the garden, rather gingerly, vowing

I’m a bit surprised a few yogurt containers spurred a recent project. From the outset, the glass jars inspired thoughts of flowers, bulbs,
beans and a box, but nothing took form until recently.

In an earlier post, I shared some small paper pockets featuring
vintage photographs and miscellany. Recently, while preparing my studio for a
visitor, I placed one of the pockets on a book I’d covered with watercolor
paper. The combination was so pretty, I decided to explore the idea a bit
further.

I’m always looking for small, creative
ways to express my love and gratitude. And I’m continuously experimenting with
simple wrapping methods to beautify those expressions. Here is a little project
that was inspired, strangely enough, by a hotel key card envelope.

accompany the flower vials I mentioned a few weeks ago, I crafted two decorative

lying about my worktable for quite some time, seemingly vying for some creative

though a series of circumstances have disrupted gatherings at our family farm,
I always think of it, as preparations are made for the Thanksgiving holiday. Something
of that place remains with me still, and quite often, it spills into my
creative work.
I’ve

former farming community. Thus far, this
